Featuring ambisonics (spat) and Antescofo technologies from Ircam FORUM
San Lorenzo in Venice was the theater that saw the premiere of Luigi Nono’s Prometeo in 1984. The architect Renzo Piano built a stage shaped like an arc, a boat that transported the audience. Marked by Prometeo and by Venice, a city where she worked for several years, Olga Neuwirth has captured the acoustics of the now abandoned San Lorenzo for her own creation: analyzed and included in the electronics, this space is now a virtual stage where Le Encantadas is performed.
Neuwirth’s sea voyage, inspired by a novel by Herman Melville, includes the Galapagos, volcanic and empty lands, its enchanted isles, a setting for nature’s strength and the end of the world. Neither text nor libretto here, but the dissemination of musicians on “islands” throughout the concert hall. The far-off archipelago is reflected in the Venetian lagoon and the symbolism of fiction in the perception of a unique space.
