Spat

Spat is a software suite for spatialization of sound signals in real-time intended for musical creation, postproduction, and live performances.

The modular software design of Spat makes it possible for the user to specify/automate the spatialization parameters independently of the restitution mode or of the type of electro-acoustic system chosen. Spatialization can be carried out during composition using a basic sound reproduction system (e.g. binaural reproduction with headphones) and can be reused with minor adjustments for larger systems such as those required for interactive installations or concert situations (e.g. a panoramic of intensity for 2D or 3D loud-speaker distribution, ambisonic formats, or Wave Field Synthesis).
Another original feature of Spat is its room effect control that employs perceptive criteria that enable the user to intuitively specify the characteristics of a specific room without having to use an acoustic or architectural vocabulary.
Spat is based on a signal-processing library written in C and C++. The modules are available as basic objects which can be interconnected with Max/MSP (localization, reflection, reverberation, balance, and decoding modules).

Main Features

Spatialisateur can be used in different settings:

Concerts and sound spatialization in real-time. The composer can associate each note or sound event in the score with a room effect or a specific position in space. The Spat~ is controlled by a sequencer, a score-following system, or any other algorithmic approach.

Post-production. a spatialization module can be affected to each channel on the mixing table in order to have access to an intuitive and global control of the positions of each source and their associated room effect.

Virtual Reality. The spatialized auditory component is essential in creating the sensations of presence and immersion in virtual reality applications, or in interactive installations. In this scenario, the binaural mode (3D restitution via headphones) in Spat can used to its fullest. The binaural mode is remarkably convincing when it is controlled either by tracking systems that follow the subject’s position and orientation or by gestural controls.

Additional Information

Perceptive controls: azimuth and elevation, heat and brilliance; presence/proximity to the sound source; room presence; early and late reverberation; surrounding; heaviness and vivacity.

Low-level DSP controls: equalizer, Doppler effect, air absorption, multi-channel reverberation, direction of a sound source according to the system used (stereo, 3/2 stereo, panoramic intensity on 4, 8, or more loudspeakers, coding/decoding for ambisonic formats from 1 to 2, vbap for the three-dimensional distribution of loudspeakers, binaural reproduction for headphone listening, or transaural reproduction for a set of loudspeakers.
